Point of View and Theme

In this unit, you will continue to learn about short stories. You will learn about two more important elements of fiction—point of view and theme. Point of view refers to the kind of narrator an author uses to tell a story. A first-person narrator is a character in a story, while a third-person narrator is not. Theme, meanwhile, refers to the main idea that a work expresses. A theme may be thought of as a statement about life, and you will learn how to recognize authors’ themes in stories.
Unit 2 will also continue to prepare you for written assignments. You will learn about a process called freewriting that will help you begin to express your ideas in written form. Also, you will gain some more tips about the correct usage of punctuation. The grammar lesson in this unit will cover colons, semicolons, and dashes.
